I made a tough choice this year. For the first time ever, that I recall, I did not send Christmas cards.
Every year I have enjoyed this tradition and the opportunity to connect with friends, family and colleagues. Over the years, the list has grown. It really becomes a week-long project between developing the list, addressing the envelopes and signing the cards — hopefully with a semblance of a message.
This year, the holidays seemed to approach with increasing speed.
There were client deadlines, new opportunities and travel. About two weeks ago I made the decision — there was no way that I could execute Christmas cards this year without putting me and several of my team into deep stress. We needed to devote that time to some other projects.
In years past, I have to confess, I probably let some important projects slide to execute a big Christmas card effort. I realize that I need to look at another way to connect with some special folks in the next few weeks, but this has me thinking outside of the box.
As you look at your fundraising program, and priorities, always keep a focus on what you can do with excellence versus what has to get done — and when. Don’t be afraid to make tough calls — it may even have you thinking of new and better ways to accomplish your goals.
